Final Countdown: Sunday the 21.09.2008 Webliners in Space on http://unsleepingworld.wordpress.com
On our next weblin Avatar Live Ride we change our persective and see the blue planet from outer space. Space ships would have already huge troubles to visit us by manoevering through our floating space rubbish – the debris – and even our own spaceships have troubles out there…
What do you have from our clumbsy outreach to the stars? Lets wonder, explore and discuss ….
Get started astronauts to travel into outer space. Meetingpoint is here on Sunday http://unsleepingworld.wordpress.com

So here now the second part of our last tour… so you have to start to read two articles below:)
Tokelau and Tuvalu, however, do not have only their sell out of a top level domain in common as we see here on the map below- they are also neighbours. Ironically, their sell out of the top-level-domain gave them the opportunity to replace this source of income with their former one. They sold their telefone line number 688 to sex hotline. They also could afford after this decision the United Nations membership, which was before a bit to expensive for the little Island nation selling fish and stamps like Tokelau. (20 000 $ per year):

But they have also something else in common- this flat Island are highly effected by the climate change, which is nicely presented by this UN animated presentation.
http://www.unep.org/wed/2007/english/melting_ice.swf
This led us to the shocking fact that one of Tokelaus and Tuvalus Island neighbours is one of the first Islands, which has to be evacuated in 2008, so now, due to the rise of sea levels. Pipp Starr, an australian documentary movie maker, visited this Island several times and documented the changes making the Island slowly inhabitable.

I am just preparing the next expedition…. so Weblins start the training because it can get a bit bumpy, when we discover the outer space. The Countdown is ticking for the start of the weblin rocket.
In my time zone 10 days to go.
So get ready to start with me on Sunday the 21st of September.
Before i finsih the report I just wanted to announce that unsleeping swims now also around in facebook. So search for unsleeping and add me:)
We started again a weblin expedition and traveled to the South Pacific. Google maps was our „aeroplane“ and brought us via express into the middle of the South Pacific- to Tokelau. A fast way to get to the smallest country of the world as it takes normally already over 30 hours on a boat to reach the next island with an airport. Below you see the first weblins arriving, which consists of three small atolls.
An here you see the main atoll of Tokelau, where we completed our little expedition team. So if you want to make the same journey- just type into google maps Tokelau. On the left side you get also some photographs presented, where the third one in the line shows the Tokelau toilets. A little interesting details is that these toilets are called the Tokelau telefone as the news get transfered in the waiting cue. For the German readers there was just a nice article in the Spiegel with some more information about the living on Tokelau. (http://www.spiegel.de/reise/fernweh/0,1518,314028-2,00.html)
Tokelau is, however, not only a nice island it is also an example for two developements, which Tokelau has in common with other islands. Firstly they sold their Top Level Domain .tk and secondly rising sea levels start to worry the inhabitants.
The island made it even with this sell out into the BBC world news:
As you can read in this more detailed article and as the island chiefs will tell you- lots happened on Tokelau since then. The .tk adress rocketed into the charts of the most used domains mainly due to the fact that you could get it for free. So you pay for the extended version, which was formerly the ad free one. Unfortunately, I was not able to look up the exact numbers the Tokelau government gets from the joint venture with Dot tk. It is only vaguely mentioned that the tk adventure provides Tokelau with an income of 10% of their household, which is by the way not big with 1500 people in the middle of the ocean. However, Tokelau has now an internet connection and around 200 computer on the island. So they can downlaod now videos from Youtube as we or even do some usefull things like long distance study or receiving medical advices in the hospital. Maybe you even meet some people from Tokelau with your weblin….
The very quick expanding network of tk pages caused also a not very nice side effect. The peaceful virtual south pacific island grew to one of the most dangerous places in the web. This lasted until last year, when dot tk changed their course towards filtering their pages and chucking out the „dodgy“ ones. So, .tk gave its high ranking to .hk Hong Kong as the most dangerous place in 2008. You can check out this often cited study on :http://www.mcafee.com/us/about/press/corporate/2008/20080604_181010_g.html
Apart from the negative effects of selling out your internetidentity, which is then often filled with contents contradicting your values and culture we had a look at some positive effects on Tokelau. So back to the Island: http://www.spc.int/prism/country/tk/stats/Social/Education/Enrolment_.htm
The tiny office for Tokelauan statistics figured out that in the last years the level of education rose, which is probably closely conntected to the new school, which could have been build. If you like statistics like me you can find there some more:)
The next step on our tour was to get a bit more an global overview on the topic of selling your country domain as Germany or other richer countries would probably not be so likely to do that. The german wikipedia page has there a handy list of all the Top Level Domain, when you follow this link and scroll down a bit. To get the point you just have to know one German work- „vermarktet“ means privatised or sold:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top-Level-Domain
So Tokelau is not the only one following this concept and suprisingly often done in the south pacific. .tv was Tuvalu and Samoa with its .ws is now used for website.
Tomorrow this expedition report will be continued as we went on to have a look into Tuvalus sex hotline past and visited the first Island, which had to be evacuated this year…… Wish me luck, because I will go now to „Trivia and Parma“ and I hope to win some dust catching kitsch.
Tomorrows topic of the virtual expedition will be the south pacific. Islands, which are well known for being a honey moon destination, their rugby players and available internet domains.
Some of them just paticipated for the first time in the olympic games, but it is uncertain for how long they can keep that up. Most of their island sink slowly in to the sea and some had already the water in front of their doorsteps.
Interested?
So come tomorrow, 7th of September, with us:
